I just plugged it in, connected with HDMI cable (You have to supply your own) and now I can watch all kinds of channels. Some for money (Netflix and Hulu + are both about $8.00 a month), some are free if you watch their commercials. I also have HBO, so I have HBO GO which is HBO at its best! All the series, all the movies, sports and documentaries, on my schedule. And on the Roku 3, it is in 1080p instead of 1080i which is what my cable provider gives as "free HD". I still have cable for HBO and local channels and sports, but I find myself watching my Roku more and more, and it provides and array of choices that make dropping cable tempting.
